Gem is a teacup chihuahua that barely weighs five pounds. She is the same size as a guinea pig.
The six-month-old pup now lives in a shelter operated by a Kent-based nonprofit group called Flori’s Friends Rescue. When she was taken there, the tiny pooch was barely a few weeks old, and she was paralyzed from the waist down.
The rescue organization was not able to get enough information about what happened to the poor chihuahua. But vets said that she was most likely hit in her spine when she was still very young. The trauma was so strong that the vets had no other option for treatment. They had to do a rear amputation.
That didn’t stop her from being a happy puppy, though.
Larger than life personality
To help Gem with her mobility, the rescue group got her a custom-made wheelchair. She also received several custom playsuits. This is because her operation left her incontinent. She needs to wear a diaper.
Although her caretakers had to give her extra attention and care, they didn’t mind the tasks at all. The pup is sweet and playful, and they absolutely adored her. The young pooch has a huge personality that makes everyone fall in love with her.
To Gem, she is as normal as all the other dogs in the rescue.
No interest
Despite being a very charming and lovable pooch, Gem doesn’t attract any interest. Ever since she has been cleared for adoption, the tiny puppy has been overlooked. The rescue group thinks that this is because she is too small and she has a lot of special needs.
They are not losing hope, though. There are still people who have hearts big enough to take in a dog that would require their patience and willingness to care for a special pup like Gem. They just hope that this ideal family will come soon.
