Countless dogs are abandoned every day. The dogs are often in pain and in horrible conditions. Many of them don’t even trust humans and would cower in a corner whenever they see people approach them. It’s also pretty common to find these dogs wandering the streets.
In Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, a post office worker named Patricia Polites had just started her shift and wasn’t expecting anything unusual to happen. It was just almost two hours into her shift when she heard someone banging on the door. It happened to be a customer who informed Patricia that an animal was in the post office lobby.
Patricia went to the lobby and found a tiny black Chihuahua shivering in the corner of the room. The dog had no leash or tag and looked relatively malnourished. Patricia picked the dog up, and the dog immediately placed his head on Patricia’s should and started crying.
It was a heartbreaking moment for Patricia. She returned to her office with the dog and placed him in a laundry basket. She even gave him some food and water. After the dog was comfortable, Patricia searched for the dog’s owner.
Patricia posted a photo of the dog online, and the news about the dog quickly spread. While waiting for rescuers to come and pick up the dog, she started getting people coming into the post office asking if they could have the dog. Patricia politely declined since rescuers from an animal rescue group called Hound Hunters of NEPA were coming to pick up the dog.
Eventually, a woman named Christine Cahill from the rescue group arrived. She took the frightened dog home to give him a warm place to stay. Christine’s daughter also gave the dog a new name, Batman.
At first, little Batman was scared and didn’t show any emotion. However, Batman started coming out of his shell the following day. He greeted Christine and her daughter with a wagging tail. He followed Christine and her daughter around in the house, just wanting a little attention and some love.
Batman was diagnosed with alopecia, which caused him to lose the fur on his ears. He also had dry skin and had a condition called the luxating patella, making it hard for him to walk, which is common in small dog breeds.
After a week of fostering Batman, she received hundreds of texts and messages on social media from people asking about Batman and his availability for adoption. Christine had to inform them that the little dog had already found his forever home.
It turned out that Christine’s daughter lost her Chihuahua a few years ago. When Christine’s daughter saw Batman, she told her mom that she would adopt him if the owner didn’t claim him. Batman officially joined Christine’s family, and he’s getting all the love and attention he deserves. Here’s a video featuring Batman’s full story and how he found his new forever home.
